Hawkeye Extension Privacy

What the Hawkeye browser extension reads, what it never reads, and when it runs.

When It Runs

The extension works only while a Hawkeye exam runs in your browser, on an exam where your educator requires it. Between exams it does nothing. After you submit, Hawkeye checks that your exam really ended, and then the extension unlocks your browser and offers to remove itself.

What It Does During the Exam

  • It keeps the exam window in fullscreen.
  • It lets pages open only on Hawkeye, the exam's website and the websites your educator allows. It sends any other page to a "This site is blocked" page.
  • It closes new empty tabs and windows.
  • It shows a "Hawkeye is recording" sign in the exam window.
  • When your educator turns them on, it blocks copying, pasting, the right-click menu, printing and some keyboard shortcuts in the exam window, and shows a short note each time.

What It Reads and Sends

  • It reads the address of each page that you open during the exam, to decide whether to block it. It does not keep or send these addresses.
  • When it blocks a page, it tells Hawkeye the website's name only, for example www.google.com. Your educator sees it as a Blocked site flag. The rest of the address, such as what you searched for, is never sent.
  • When you leave fullscreen for more than 5 seconds, it tells Hawkeye, and your educator sees a Left fullscreen flag.
  • When pasting is blocked and you try to paste into the exam, it reads the text you tried to paste and tells Hawkeye. Your educator sees it as a Paste flag that keeps at most 480 characters of that text. The extension does not keep the text, and never reads your clipboard at any other time.
  • If the exam has an access code, it lets you paste the code and then clears your clipboard, so the code can't be pasted again. It also clears your clipboard when the exam ends.

What It Never Reads

The extension never reads the content of web pages, your files, your browsing history, your passwords or your other extensions. It has no Hawkeye password or sign-in of its own: it talks only to the Hawkeye exam page that you have open.

The webcam, microphone and screen recordings come from the Hawkeye exam page, not from the extension. The exam page asks for each one and tells you what it records.

What It Stores on Your Computer

During the exam, the extension stores the exam's title, its times and the warnings so far, so that its menu can show them. After the exam it keeps only the exam's title and length, for the "Exam submitted" page, until your next exam.

Why It Asks for Its Permissions

Read and change data on all websites
To show the fullscreen warning and the recording sign in the exam window, whatever website the exam uses, and to send blocked pages to the blocked page. It does this only during an exam.
Block content on any page
To keep other websites closed during the exam.
Modify data you copy and paste
To clear your clipboard after you paste the exam's access code and when the exam ends. It never reads your clipboard with this permission.
Storage
To keep the running exam's title, times and warnings for its menu.

Removing It

After you submit, the extension removes itself in 10 seconds unless you choose Keep Installed. You can also remove it at any time from your browser's extensions page. If you remove it during an exam, your educator sees a "Hawkeye extension stopped" flag.
