What Hawkeye records

What Hawkeye records during your exam, when recording starts and stops, and who reviews it.

Hawkeye records you so that your educator can check that the exam was fair. This page lists what Hawkeye keeps and for how long. The Privacy Policy gives the full details.

When recording starts and stops

Hawkeye does not record during the pre-check. Recording starts when you press Start the Exam. The red Recording badge shows while Hawkeye records.

Before you can start, the pre-check asks you to agree to be recorded. You tick “I agree to be recorded as described”. If you do not agree, you cannot start the exam. Contact your educator about another way to take it. The pre-check, step by step shows this step.

Recording stops when you submit, when the timer reaches zero, or when you close or reload the Hawkeye window.

What Hawkeye records

What When
Your webcam video and your microphone sound From Start until the exam ends
Your entire screen From Start until the exam ends
Your face photo When you press Take Photo in the pre-check
A photo of your ID, if the exam asks for it When you press Use This Photo in the pre-check
The extra details your educator asks for, such as a student ID When you press Save and Continue in the pre-check
Flags: moments that Hawkeye marks for your educator to check During the exam
A screenshot of your shared screen One second after you go to another tab or window, or leave fullscreen
Your internet address (IP address) and a device cookie that identifies your browser Each time your browser sends Hawkeye part of your exam

Hawkeye records your entire screen. Anything on your screen during the exam is in the recording, including other windows.

When you go to another tab or window, or leave fullscreen, Hawkeye also takes one screenshot of your shared screen. It takes at most one screenshot every 30 seconds. The screenshot shows the same screen as the recording. Your educator sees it next to the flag.

What a flag is

A flag marks a moment in the recording. Hawkeye adds a flag when, for example, you go to another tab, you paste, the camera sees no face or more than one face, or the microphone hears a loud sound. During the exam lists the flags that Hawkeye adds during the exam.

After the exam, Hawkeye adds more flags in these cases:

  • Your internet address changed during the exam.
  • Another student of the same exam used the same internet address at the same time.
  • Another student of the same exam used the same device cookie.
  • Part of a recording is missing.

Your educator can turn off the checks of internet addresses and device cookies.

A flag is not a decision. Your educator watches the recording at each flag and decides.

Where the checks run

The face photo checks and the face checks run in your browser, on your computer. Hawkeye does not send your video or your photo to an AI service. Your recording, your photo and your details go only to Hawkeye.

Who reviews it

The educator of the exam reviews your session. Your educator sees your webcam and screen recordings side by side, your face photo, your details, your name and email, and the flags. Your educator then marks the session as cleared or flagged and can add notes.

How long Hawkeye keeps it

What How long
Your face photo 30 days after the exam
Photo of your ID 7 days after the exam
Your webcam, microphone and screen recordings 30 days after the exam
Screenshots of your screen 30 days after the exam
The exam record: flags, notes, the result and your details It stays with your educator until your educator deletes the exam

Hawkeye then deletes the photo, the recordings and the screenshots. Your educator can keep copies. Ask your educator what happens after 30 days.

If you have a question about your recording, ask your educator. To ask Hawkeye to see or delete your data, write to support@hawkeye.com.
